Wash Day: 15 Weeks Post 4/19 Relaxer Touch Up

I made it to 15 weeks in my stretch, which is a week longer than I've gone in the past, but the hairstylist has been called and an appointment set for a relaxer touch-up. I'll be 16 weeks then. To prepare my hair I followed my pre-relaxer touch-up regimen which consists of
  • Detangle
  • Pre-poo
  • Cleanse (clarify)
  • Light Protein Treatment
  • Deep Condition
  • Moisturize and Seal
  • Flat iron new growth.

Before we get into the meat of this post, I'd like to apologize for not having any hair pictures. I had family in town over the weekend and wasn't able to get any usable ones.

Pre-pooed

I sectioned my hair into five sections and applied an oil mix of sunflower and coconut oil to my scalp and new growth. To the line of demarcation and the rest of the length, I applied a mix of a keratin conditioner and the Suave Natural Infusions Ant-Breakage Conditioner. To my ends, I applied L'Oreal Total 5 Restoring Conditioner with Ceramides. I put on a plastic cap and left everything to sit for an hour, without heat.

Cleansed

For cleansing, I used the SheaMoisture African Black Soap Deep Cleansing Shampoo to clarify and followed up with a green tea rinse.

Deep conditioned

I used my trusty Eden BodyWorks Jojoba Monoi Deep Conditioner for this step.

Leave in and sealant

I t-shirt dried for about an hour. After that, I applied the Eden BodyWorks Coconut Shea Leave-in Conditioner which I mixed with a little sunflower and coconut oil and got out any leftover tangles with my fingers.

Dried

I finished drying under my hooded dryer for about 45 minutes.

Flat ironed

After my hair cooled I applied Thermafuse f450 One Pass Hot Iron Activated Smoothing Creme as a heat protectant and flat ironed my growth leaving some texture and avoiding my ends. The reason for flat ironing my new growth was so I could easily get a comb through it and get out all of the tangles and avoid major matting and tangling before my touch-up.

The results

My hair felt so soft after I was done. I couldn't keep my hands out of it. I did have quite a bit of shed hair this time around, but I'm attributing that to the fact I had some hidden matting and tangles to work through.

How do you prepare for a relaxer touch-up?

I like to cleanse, condition, protein treat if needed, flat iron the roots.

  2. I'm a sucker for some super soft hair! And I always find tons of hidden shed hairs when I straighten so you're totally not the only one! Good luck with your touch up chica!

    1. Thanks for the encouragement. I did freak out a little at all of the shed hairs, but then I started finding small sections of matted hair and realized all of the shedding was to be expected.

  3. Congrats making it to 16 weeks! I am now 12 weeks post but my finger is on the speed dial number for my stylist! :) My hair is doing fine at 12 weeks, but I've been tired lately and easily frustrated with my super thick new growth...but at the same time I thank God for the thickness. I'm going to hold on for as long as I can and to prepare, the only significant thing I do differently is apply a medium to hard protein treatment the week before.

    1. Thanks Candra! Don't give up. About 12/13 weeks I thought about calling it quits on the stretch, but seeing how much growth I had and how thick it was kept me going.
