My Favorite Things 2021: Makeup

As I mentioned in my 2021 skincare favorite things post, I had a good skin year so I didn’t wear makeup as often as I typically do. So I had to think long and hard about what new products I used and really liked this year.

Then I realized that I put more of an emphasis on my eye makeup this year. I discovered brow gel and pencils, these were things that I pretty much completely ignored. I also tried out a few new eyeshadow palettes.

Too Faced Foundation, Juvia's Place Eyeshadow Palettes, and more makeup sitting on brown marble background.

When it comes to my brows I tried out gels and pencils and discovered that I prefer a self-sharpening brow pencil. They are quick and easy to use and from what I’ve seen they don’t cost a lot. Plus, several of them come with a little brush on one side so you can brush your brow hairs all in one direction.

There wasn’t one brand or specific brow pencil that I can say I used the most as I’m not particular and would buy what was on sale. Here are the brow pencils I used this year:

Morphe Definer Brow Pencil: It’s been hit or miss with this brow pencil. I like the brush on one of the ends to shape my brows, the finish, and available shades, but sometimes the tip of it breaks off making the pencil unusable. I used three of these pencils this past year and one of them broke, the other two were fine.

Revlon ColorStay Brow Pencil: This one was my least favorite. It was a little clunkier than the others and I also didn’t care for how the shade looked on me.

L’Oreal Brow Stylist Definer: I like this one as it’s easy to use, there’s a brush at one end to help shape my brows, the shade is on point, the tip hasn’t broken off, and it’s budget-friendly.

I love eyeshadow so I splurged a little and bought a few Juvia’s Place eyeshadow palettes - The Chocolates, The Berries, The Taupes, and The Nomad.

The Chocolates and The Berries have become the eyeshadow palettes that I reach for first. They blend really well and look good throughout the day. Since I started using these eyeshadow palettes and changed my shadow application technique I’ve been getting more makeup compliments.

Some other eyeshadow I used this year was sent to me to try out and review from Influenster. It was two Laura Mercier RoseGlow Caviar Stick Eye Colors. I really liked how easy they were to use and travel with. You can see me using one of the eye color sticks in this Instagram Reel

For the rest of my makeup, I didn’t buy much as I had several free products I could use and a small stash of my staples. My staple foundation this year was the Too Faced Born This Way Matte Foundation.

I think the color match of the Too Faced Born This Way Matte Foundation is great and it looks good throughout the day with very little blotting or touching up. I’ve been wearing this foundation so much that when I wore the drugstore foundation I had been wearing, the Maybelline Fit Me Matte And Poreless, I started to hate it. It felt weird on my face, the color was a little off, and it didn’t look good after 5 hours of wear. I don’t think I’ll be rebuying it anytime soon.

The other makeup I used in 2021 was:

The Elf Camo CC Cream for a light makeup day foundation. For some reason, as the year went on the shade wasn't working for me. It started to look too light. I've since stopped wearing it by itself and have been mixing it with the last of the Maybelline Fit Me Matte And Poreless.

The Urban Decay All Nighter Setting Spray to set my makeup. I’m not sure it makes a huge difference as I’ve had a few days where I forgot to spray it on and at the end of the day, my makeup didn’t look worse than normal.

The Tarte Shape Tape Concealer for under my eyes and as a base for my eyeshadow. I found that using concealer is just as good as an eyeshadow primer.

The Maybelline Fit Me Matte And Poreless Powder as setting powder. It does a decent job and doesn’t cost a lot. I may look for another setting powder at some point this year.

My mascara used this year was a couple of full-sized samples I got from Influenster to try out, The Milk Makeup KUSH High Volumizing Mascara and the Laura Mercier Caviar Volume Panoramic Mascara
