Penetrating Natural Oils For Chemically-treated Hair: Avocado Oil

I love avocados. I add them to my salads, my salsa, and eat them on their own as a chip dip. I know that avocados can be good for you when you eat them so imagine my surprise when I found out that avocados are also good for your hair. And not just in their solid form but also as an oil.

Yes, there is such a thing as avocado oil. Once I found that out I had to do some investigation. What I found is avocado oil is made from, pressing the fleshy fruit pulp and not the avocado pit. It is a lightweight oil which helps it to more easily penetrate the hair shaft which is great but what can it do to help our hair?

Benefits of using avocado oil

Avocado oil is high in vitamins and minerals like Vitamins A, B, D, E, and amino acids that help protect and strengthen the hair. And it can assist with hair growth and scalp health. This is probably why more and more hair products have avocado oil in them. Some other benefits of avocado oil include:

Hair taming

The oil is good for taming frizzy hair and can help prevent split ends.

Heat protection

Avocado oil has a high heat point - 480 degrees Fahrenheit unrefined and 520 degrees Fahrenheit refined.

Moisture

Avocado oil itself doesn't moisturize the hair, but it has high humectant properties which helps to draw, retain and lock moisture in the hair. It can also help add moisture to the scalp which could help fight off dandruff caused by scalp dryness.

Nourishment

Avocado oil contains monounsaturated fatty acid which can help nourish and strengthen hair strands that have been weakened from chemicals, dryness, and heat. Additionally, this can help prevent hair breakage.

UV protection

Due to the omega-3 fatty acids the avocado oil contains, it has some UV reflection properties. So it can be used as a natural SPF for your hair.
