I’ve learned that if I’m going to use that much heat on my hair I need to make sure I’m doing everything I can to give my hair as much protection as possible.

Using heat on my relaxed hair isn’t something new. In fact, before I started my healthy relaxed hair journey I used to blow dry and flat iron my hair. I still cringe when I think about that. Thankfully my hair didn’t suffer any major heat damage then and I definitely want to make sure it doesn’t now. That’s why I use a heat protectant on my hair.

I’ve used a few good heat protectants over the years but I recently stumbled on one that has blown all of the rest out of the water. It’s the Mongongo Oil Thermal & Heat Protectant Spray from Mielle Organics also known as Mielle.
I can’t quite remember how I stumbled upon the haircare brand Mielle. I think it may have been on Instagram or maybe it was through a hair influencer I follow. However it happened I’m glad it did.
The Mielle Mongongo Oil Thermal & Heat Protectant Spray is the third product from this brand I’ve tried and the second one that I liked. You can see which other products I tried and didn’t like in this video.
This Thermal & Heat Protectant spray specifically claims to
You can use it for heat protection when you blow-dry and when you flat iron.
To use the spray I first put a water-based leave-in conditioner on my freshly washed and wet hair. Then I generously spray this heat protectant on my strands paying close attention to my roots and ends.

I’ve been using this spray for a few months now and have noticed a big difference in how my relaxed hair dries. My hair is drying a lot quicker but doesn’t feel dry, it still feels moisturized. I’m also able to get my hair looking and feeling smoother. Plus, I don’t experience frizz throughout the week, even when I wear my hair down in humid weather.
While there are several things I like about the Mielle Mongongo Oil Thermal & Heat Protectant Spray there are a few things I’m not too crazy about. They’re little things and wouldn’t keep me from using or recommending this product.
The first thing is the bottle is so small! It’s a 4 oz bottle so I go through this stuff pretty quickly. My hair is only shoulder length right now and not as thick as it used to be so I can’t imagine how quickly I’d go through a bottle if my hair was longer or thicker. To get around this I plan to stock up when Mielle is on sale. In fact, I bought five of these bottles during the last sale they had on their site.

- It retails for $9.99 on the Mielle site but you can sometimes get it for less during a sale.
- I haven’t been able to find the spray in many other retailers. Though Mielle is sold in stores like Sally Beauty, Walmart, and Target I haven’t found the spray in any of those stores.

This heat protectant is part of Mielle’s Mongongo Oil line which is formulated to hydrate, repair, and protect the hair, especially hair that is exposed to heat styling tools.
Another thing I’m not too crazy about is the ingredients including protein - Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein. The protein is pretty far down the ingredient list and there’s only one protein in the ingredients but since I’ve had my protein scare I’d prefer to use as few proteins as possible. To make sure I’m not using too much protein on my hair I’m making sure the majority of the other products I use don’t have any protein ingredients.
That’s it. Only two things. As I previously said they aren’t enough to make me stop using them and I’ve figured out how to make them less of an issue.
As long as I keep using heat on my hair the Mielle Mongongo Oil Thermal & Heat Protectant Spray will be my go-to heat protectant.
