Why The Urban Decay All Nighter Setting Spray Is My Go-to Setting Spray

Let’s add setting spray to the list of makeup products I had never heard of or used until I was an adult. Wearing makeup was really a thing in my house growing up. So all of my exposure to makeup came from TV, magazines, and as an adult the internet.

I can’t recall exactly when I became aware that makeup setting sprays existed and what they were for. I do know that the first brand I tried is the brand I’ve been using since. And that brand is Urban Decay.

What setting spray is and what it does

Setting spray is a liquid mist that is used to help makeup last longer by preventing smudging, flaking, and fading. It’s usually applied after a full face of makeup to “set” it in place.

Urban Decay’s setting sprays

Makeup brand Urban Decay has several different types of setting sprays available. I’ve used most of them and one that I prefer and use every time I wear makeup, in particular foundation.

There is the Urban Decay All Nighter Ultra Matte Makeup Setting Spray. I’ve used this one and didn’t feel like it kept my makeup looking matte for an abnormal period of time. No matter how much I shook it, this spray would leave little beads on my skin when I sprayed it on.

Next is the Urban Decay All Nighter Ultra Glow Makeup Setting Spray. I haven’t used this one because, with my oily skin, I have a natural glow and don’t need to use glowy products.

Another option is the Urban Decay De-Slick Oil Control Makeup Setting Spray. Like the Matte one, I wasn’t impressed and didn’t think it helped control my oil any better than my matte foundations did.

The newest option is the Urban Decay All Nighter Brightening Vitamin C Makeup Setting Spray. I haven’t tried this one yet and have no plans to.

The one that I use and is the OG is the All Nighter Long-Lasting Makeup Setting Spray. I think this does a better job of helping to control my oily skin and keeping my skin looking good over time than any of the other ones I’ve tried.

About the Urban Decay All Nighter Long-Lasting Makeup Setting Spray

Now that you know this is my preferred setting spray, let me share why.

It claims to set makeup for up to 16 hours which I think it does though I’ve never counted how many hours I’ve worn it for.

It says that All Nighter Spray is a lightweight, microfine mist ensuring fresh, flawless makeup all day that won’t set into fine lines, melt, or fade. I’ve noticed that my makeup doesn’t fade away like it’s prone to because of my oily skin when I use the spray. When I don’t it sometimes looks like I didn’t apply my makeup fully because so much has faded away.

Additionally, it has patented Temperature Control Technology that helps to lower the temperature of makeup to help lock it in better.

Here’s how to apply the setting spray
  • Give the bottle several good shakes to activate it.
  • Hold the bottle about 8-10 inches from your face (or a good guesstimate which is what I do).
  • Spray it in an “X” and “T” formation about 3-5 times or until your face is fully saturated.

How I use the Urban Decay All Nighter Long-Lasting Makeup Setting Spray

There are two ways that I use the Urban Decay All Nighter Long Lasting Setting Spray
  1. Quick and easy - this is when I’m planning to only have my makeup on for a few hours, not the full day and I don’t care about having an oily glow.
    • I start with my primer, apply my foundation, and the rest of my makeup. I finish off with one or two passes of the setting spray.
    • This helps my makeup look good and stay in place until the evening rolls around.
  2. For all-day setting power - this is when I want to make sure my makeup lasts all day and I want to slow down my oily glow.
    • I start off like normal applying primer. When I apply my foundation I first spray my makeup sponge with the setting spray then I apply my foundation.
    • After all my makeup is applied I finish off with two or three passes of the setting spray.
    • This method helps my makeup look good until I’m ready to remove it at night. It also helps my makeup to stay in place even if I start to get a little overheated.

My thoughts on Urban Decay All Nighter Long-Lasting Makeup Setting Spray

When I first bought this setting spray years ago I was skeptical that it would do anything. This was the first setting spray I would be using. I soon realized that it was really good at helping to slow down my looking oily. Before I started using it I would start to look oily by the time I arrived at work in the morning.

It also really does set my makeup. Prior to using this Urban Decay setting spray, I noticed that my foundation would move around during the day and start looking patchy especially when I would get oily or warm. So if I wanted to go out after work I would have to apply a layer of pressed powder on top to even out the foundation or just go with it. Using setting spray keeps my foundation in place and all I need to do is a little blotting in my oily areas and I am good to go.

I've even seen the Urban Decay All Nighter Long-Lasting Makeup Setting Spray in action when I've been sweating. I still will see a little dripping of the makeup but after doing a quick blot it looks good again.

When I buy this setting spray I like to buy it during sales, like one of Ulta’s buy one get one 50% off sales or seasonal haul sales.
