What I Used On A Relaxer Touch-Up Prep Wash Day

Before my relaxer touch-up appointments, I usually try to give my hair a little extra attention. I want it to be clean, moisturized, and strong, as I’ve found that helps me to have good results afterward and minimize potential damage.

If my hair has been feeling dry or if my ends are looking like they need some extra moisture, I may switch things up and add a few steps to my normal wash day routine. That's exactly what I did recently, and I filmed the entire process.

Typically, when I wash my hair, I shampoo, deep condition, dry, and style. It’s only when I feel like my hair needs a bit more love that I’ll add a pre-poo and/or a strengthening treatment. This time I did both.

A light, nourishing pre-poo

Before washing my hair, I applied the Mielle Mango & Tulsi 3-in-1 Serum as a light pre-shampoo treatment.

This is a product that I’ve had sitting around for a while and have recently started using as an overnight treatment or a light pre-poo. The texture is more creamy than a traditional clear serum, and it has a tropical scent that smells amazing.

If you look for this product to get some for yourself, as of the posting of this, I haven’t been able to find it in stock at any reputable retailers. And Mielle notes it as out of stock on their site.

While the serum sat on my hair, I did a little detangling and gave myself time to grab something to eat before heading to the shower to shampoo.

Moisturizing shampoo

My original plan was to use two different moisturizing shampoos: the Joico Moisture Recovery Shampoo and the Design Essentials Agave & Lavender Moisturizing & Strengthening Shampoo. But once I got into the shower, plans changed.

I ended up using the Joico Moisture Recovery Shampoo for both lathers. No particular reason. Just because I wanted to.

Strengthening with a bond repair treatment

After shampooing, I used the L'Oréal Bond Repair Pre-Shampoo Treatment. This was a free sample I got from L’Oreal by filling out an online form.

Technically, this product is designed to be used before shampooing, but I had a little bit left and decided to experiment with using it after washing instead. I've tested it both ways and have been curious to see which method I prefer.

I see using it after shampoo is the same as when I do a protein treatment after shampooing. So far, I like the results I’ve seen and felt when using it as a post-shampoo treatment.

As always, I made sure to pay extra attention to my ends.

A moisturizing and strengthening conditioner cocktail

One thing I don't do very often is mix conditioners, but I decided to do so on this wash day. I combined the Pantene Abundant & Strong Conditioner, which I’d been gifted by Influenster, and the Redken All Soft Heavy Cream Treatment.

The Pantene conditioner was gifted to me, and I've actually enjoyed using it. Even though I generally prefer deep conditioners over regular rinse-out conditioners, this one has worked pretty well for me.

The Redken treatment added some extra richness, and together they made a really nice combination.

To help the conditioner cocktail really sink into my hair strands, I sat under my hooded hair steamer.
Normally, I would use my deep conditioning cap, but I wanted to pamper my hair a little more. Steam treatments are one of my favorite ways to add a little extra moisture to my wash days, especially when my hair is feeling dry.

After the hair steamer timer beeped and I let my hair cool off, I rinsed out the deep conditioner, and now it was time to dry and style my hair.

Blow drying and flat ironing

I opted to dry my hair this week by blow-drying. When I want to spend the time, I may opt to do a roller set instead of blow drying. This wasn’t one of those wash days.

After rinsing out the conditioner, I wrapped my hair in a microfiber towel to help remove excess water from my hair while I handled a few things around the house.

Before I started drying my hair, I applied the L'Oréal EverPure Moisture 21-in-1 Leave-In Spray to add moisture and Garnier Fructis Sleek & Stay Heat Protectant Serum to seal in the moisture and provide heat protection.

I had been wanting to try the Garnier serum for a while and thought this wash day would be the perfect opportunity.

I blow-dried my hair using my Shark FlexStyle with the nozzle attachment.

Lately, I've been taking a break from the comb attachment and have been enjoying the results I'm getting with just the nozzle. I simply pull my hair taut while drying and then come back with the flat iron afterward.

The next morning, I flat-ironed my hair and used the Garnier serum again as my heat protectant.

I was really happy with how everything turned out. My hair felt soft, smooth, and moisturized, which was exactly what I was hoping for heading into my upcoming relaxer touch-up.
