Using Grapeseed Oil On Your Relaxed Hair

If you like to use natural oils on your hair vs hair serums with a mixture of ingredients. Grapeseed oil is one to consider trying. This is a lightweight oil that won't leave relaxed hair feeling greasy. I started using it after seeing it recommended over and over in the healthy hair community, and it eventually became one of my favorite sealing oils because it adds shine without weighing my hair down.

Not only that, this non-penetrating oil has several other uses outside of sealing in moisture and adding shine without leaving residue. It can help to support scalp health and dilute essential oils.

What is grapeseed oil?

As you'd expect, it's an oil derived from the pressing of winemaking grape seeds. The oil itself is non-greasy, light, and odorless. The best types to use are pure organic or organic cold-pressed grapeseed oil.

Benefits of grapeseed oil

  • It's a light oil, so it doesn't weigh down the hair, making it good for those with thin hair
  • It's odorless, so there's no lingering scent if that's a reason you're not using natural oils
  • It can be used as a carrier oil for essential oils. In fact, I've started using it to dilute my Jamaican Black Castor Oil
  • Better hair health from the Vitamin E and linoleic acid it contains
  • The oil contains high levels of ceramides, which are very beneficial for strengthening chemically-treated hair

One thing to remember is that grapeseed oil can help seal in mositure but not provide moisture ot the hair as oils don't provide moisture.

Ways to use grapeseed oil

  • As a hot oil treatment by itself or by mixing it with other natural oils
  • A conditioner enhancer when you mix a teaspoon into the amount of deep conditioner you're applying to your hair on wash day
  • Scalp massages by adding some to your fingers, and gently massaging on your scalp. You can also mix it with an essential oil like tea tree or rosemary
  • As a finishing or sealing oil by putting a few drops on your hands and working it into your strands after styling or moisturizing

How I've used grapeseed oil in my relaxed hair reoutine

I don't consistently use grapeseed oil on my hair. I tend to rotate this in and out of my hair regimen. When it is part of my hair regimen, here's how I've used it

  • After moisturizing: I would take a few drops and smooth them over my hair. This helped to seal in the moisture I just applied so my hair stayed moisturized longer
  • Wash day: I'd sometimes add a small amount to my deep conditioner for extra slip
  • DIY oil treatments: I'd use it as a carrier oil when mixing tea tree or rosemary essential oils for a hair or scalp oil treatment
  • After styling: I would use a drop or two to help tame flyaways and add shine without making my hair look oily or be weighed down

Where to purchase grapeseed oil

You can find and purchase this wherever cooking oils are found, as well as in health food stores and even online.
