8 Ways To Get Your Hair Regimen Ready For Spring

Ah, spring! One of my favorite seasons. With spring comes longer days, more sun, warmer weather, and more time outside.

This also means that our relaxed hair is going to be more exposed to the elements - sun, wind, rain, and increasing humidity just to name a few. When the seasons change I like to evaluate the hair care products I use on my relaxed hair to see if anything needs to be phased out or if I need to make some changes and spring is no different.

When I think about adjusting my hair regimen for spring I think about lighter hair products because my hair doesn't need as much assistance in staying moisturized. I also start to think about preparing my hair to not fall victim to the increased humidity and to stay smooth during the spring showers.

With all of that in mind here are 8 hair regimen changes we can make for spring.

1. Shampoo more

During the winter you may find yourself reaching for the co-wash more and the shampoo less because it helps with keeping your hair’s moisture levels up. This totally works when the weather is colder because we’re more time inside and less time outside working up a sweat.

That tends to change in the spring. When the weather warms up we tend to gravitate to outdoor activities that get our hair sweaty and dirty more often. As a result, you may find yourself needing to shampoo more to remove all that sweat and dirt from your hair and scalp.

Some great shampoos to add to your relaxed hair regimen for springtime are

2. Change up your shampoo

Not only is shampooing more a good idea in the spring but changing your shampoo can be as well. Depending on your hair type you may not need to use a moisturizing shampoo every wash day like you did in the winter. You may find that your hair could benefit from using a clarifying or deep cleansing shampoo every now and then like the ORS Creamy Aloe Shampoo

Other types of shampoos that could be helpful to rotate in your spring hair regimen are

3. Phase out heavier hair products

To keep my hair feeling moisturized in the winter and not dry out the moment I step outside our door I tend to reach more for heavier cream leave-in conditioners, natural oils, and serums. Because of their heavier consistency, they help my hair hold moisture better and longer.

When the weather warms up though and there's more humidity these heavier products can weigh our hair down. That’s when switching to lighter leave-ins like the Eden BodyWorks Coconut Shea Leave-in Conditioner or a liquid conditioner like the Mielle White Peony Leave In Conditioner may be beneficial.

Some oils that have a lighter consistency that can be good for spring are Grapeseed Oil and Avocado Oil.

4. Air dry more

As we’ve all heard using heat on our hair does more harm than good because it pulls moisture and hydration from the hair strands quickly causing hair damage. That being said sometimes using heat on our hair can’t be avoided especially when it comes to drying our hair. When it’s cold outside you don’t want to go outside with wet hair or even go to bed with wet hair. So it makes sense that air drying in the winter is less of an option so we reach for our hairdryers more.

When the weather warms up though it provides an opportunity for us to give our hair a break from the heat by air drying. The warmer spring weather can help speed up the air-drying process and it’s not so much of a gamble to leave the house with wet hair as it is in the winter.

If your hair is like mine and doesn't respond well to fully air drying or it takes too long to completely air dry your hair, you can try air drying until your hair is slightly damp. Then you can finish drying your hair with a blow dryer on medium to low heat. Don't forget your heat protectant!

5. Use humidity-blocking products

With warmer weather typically comes higher humidity. And that can mess up a hairstyle real quick. One way to lessen the chance of this is to use products with humidity blockers. They can help control the amount of moisture that gets into your strands resulting in less frizz and smoother hair.

6. Trade the satin bonnet for a satin scarf

One way to have a healthy head of hair is to also take care of it when you sleep by wearing a satin bonnet. When the weather warms up that can cause some night sweats and make sleeping a little hotter than it needs to be. Instead of keeping your hair uncovered switch to wearing a satin scarf instead of a bonnet. Not only does it help you stay cool it also helps your scalp breathe better at night.

7. Get regular trims

We are all tempted to do it. Some of us even give in to the temptation. I’m talking about hanging on to dry, brittle, they’ve gotta go ends. You might be surprised how dry or brittle your ends can get from the cold winter weather and from rubbing your sweaters and scarves.

Spring is a great time to start fresh and get rid of those have-to-go ends before they cause some serious split end damage that will force you into a haircut. It's also a great time to start making it a habit to trim your hair more.

8. Be prepared

Spring showers bring humidity both of which can put a damper on that beautiful hairstyle you left the house with. There has been many a day where I had styled my hair and within the 30-40 minute commute from my house to work my hairstyle disappeared. All thanks to the humidity in the air or the rain shower.

It didn’t take me long to learn that I needed to carry a satin hair tie or clip so I could put my hair up when that happened. So the moral of the story is to carry a satin scrunchie or hair clip with you in case you have a need to put your hair up in a ponytail or bun.

With the coming of spring comes longer days, more sun, warmer weather and possibly more rain showers. With each changing season I like to evaluate the hair care products I use and see if anything needs to be put phased out or if I need to a new product. | arelaxedgal.com
