Top Sephora Makeup & Skincare Picks For Oily Skin

Whenever I see a Sephora, I get the urge to walk in. Even if I don’t have anything that I need to buy or can afford to buy. In fact, when my mom and I were vacationing in Vancouver, we saw there was a Sephora near our hotel and decided to pay it a visit.


Now, while I’m a fan of Sephora, I do wish they had more sales throughout the year. Makeup and skincare can be expensive. I only have so much discretionary income that I can spend before I have to start skipping visiting my family or meals. So when Sephora has a sale, I start putting together a list of things I’d like to buy.

I have oily skin, so I’m selective about what products I use because I want to do everything I can to keep the oil to a minimum. Here are my Sephora picks.

Original BeautyBlender Makeup Sponge

The Original BeautyBlender is probably one of the most popular makeup sponges. It's super-soft, made of latex-free foam, and comes in a fun pink color.

I prefer using a makeup sponge to apply my liquid foundation, as I feel like I get a better finish and set of my liquid foundation when I use a makeup sponge versus a brush. Because of that, I have tried out several makeup sponges, including the Original BeautyBlender. 

While the BeautyBlender did a good job of applying my makeup, I wasn't a fan of the sponge itself. It didn't get as fluffy as I would have liked, and it also was a little too dense. There is a drugstore brand I personally prefer. That being said, if I could get the BeautyBlender during a 50% off sale, I would probably buy it. Especially because it now has some versions in darker colors, which is great for those of us who use darker foundation shades.

Make Up For Ever HD Skin Shine-Controlling & Blurring Setting Powder

One of the musts for oily skin is a good setting powder. A good one really helps with controlling oil and shine, whether it's used as a base before foundation, to set foundation, or both ways. 

I've been using a previous version of this Make Up For Ever HD Setting Powder for a while now. It does a good job of making my makeup look matte and helping to minimize shine in my T-zone. This version claims to be super-fine and "diminish excess shine for a soft matte finish that lasts 24 hours without caking or enhancing texture, even on drier skin types." So I would imagine it would perform the same or better than the older version I'm still using.

There are a total of six shades, with two darker shades. The lighter of the two darker shades is Deep Sienna, which is for deep skin with neutral to golden undertones. The other one is Deep Espresso. It's the darkest shade and is said to be for deep skin with neutral to warm undertones.

I'm interested in trying this one because the previous version did a good job of making my makeup look matte and helping to slow down the shine that always happens in my T-zone.

I wear a full face of makeup most days, but I like to keep the face makeup light. Either wearing a powder foundation or a CC cream. This is a CC cream I'd like to try out because I've known a few people in real life who have used it and loved it on their oily skin.

This CC cream from IT Cosmetics is full-coverage, gives a matte finish without drying the skin out, and even includes 40 SPF. Plus, you can find it in 26 shades.

Urban Decay All Nighter Long-Lasting Makeup Setting Spray

This setting spray claims to keep your makeup "fresh, smudge-proof, and transfer resistant for up to 16 hours." It's not made specifically for oily skin, but I think it gives a light matte finish and does a good job of helping to slow down shine while keeping your makeup locked in all day.

Now Urban Decay does have a setting spray that is specifically made for those with oily skin. I have tried it and wasn't impressed. It doesn't spray evenly, and I felt that it was less effective in keeping my makeup looking good throughout the day.



Skincare picks at Sephora

Paula's Choice Skin Perfecting 2% BHA Exfoliating Toner for Clear Skin

I have yet to use any Paula's Choice skincare products but have them on my list to try. This particular product is an exfoliating toner that has ingredients like 2% salicylic acid and green tea. The 2% salicylic acid (also known as BHA) helps clear up buildup from pores and shed dead skin. While the green tea helps soothe irritated skin and improve visible signs of aging.

The Ordinary Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1% Serum

When I started using facial serums, this is one of the first ones I used. The reason is that this is a water-based serum that not only helps to enhance skin brightness and strengthen the skin’s moisture barrier. This serum also helps to improve texture and reduce excess oil. All things that you want for oily skin.

Since I started using this Niacinamide serum, I've seen less oiliness on my face and fewer breakouts. I use it day and night as the third step in my skincare routine.


Murad acne skincare

Back when I had adult acne covering most of my face, I could only find one skincare brand that would clear it up. That was Murad. Back then, I was using them; they had a smaller product line than they do now. I imagine that most, if not all, of their products are great, but the two that I really liked when I was dealing with my adult acne were an acne control cleanser and a facial lotion. It looks like those are not being sold anymore, but are there some that I would consider now
