For years I struggled with finding the right eyeshadows to wear. Part of it was just ignorance of what I should be looking for, but a good part of it was there weren’t many options available formulated for darker skin tones especially within my budget.

At some point, I became tired of having my eyeshadow look too light and not being able to use most of the shades in the eyeshadow palettes I was buying. So I went online to research what I could do about it and found four tips that have been helpful for me.

1. Know your undertone

Your undertone is the color under the surface of your skin. There are three different types of undertones - warm, cool, or neutral. Knowing what your undertone is can help with selecting shades that best compliment you. Warm undertones look great with golds, yellows, and earthy browns. Cool undertones look great with blues, pinks, and reds. Neutral undertones work well with both.

2. Start with deeper neutral tones

This doesn’t mean you only need to use chocolates and tawny browns, you can also use other colors but deep neutral eyeshadow palettes are a good place to start.

3. Look for rich shades

In addition to neutrals, richer shades like jewel tones (e.g. emerald green, rich purples, burgundy) are another color group to look for.

4. Avoid white, pale, frosty shades

This may go without saying. If the palette has a lot of these shades, avoid it because it won’t work for you.

5. Look for high pigmentation

This means the shadow color is highly intense and vivid. So the color is more likely to look the same on your eyelid as it does in the palette pan. Additionally, higher pigmented eye shadows tend to last longer.
