20 Festive Hair Accessories For Holiday Hairstyles

The holidays are a good excuse to dress up your hairstyles, even if you don't want to spend a lot of time styling your hair.

One of the things I look for when shopping for holiday hair accessories is something that fits my style, looks festive, and works with my relaxed hair without creating unnecessary pulling or snagging.

I found several pretty options that can dress up everything from a sleek hairstyle and curls to a bun or updo. Whether you're getting ready for a holiday party, family gathering, or just want to add a little sparkle to your everyday hairstyle, here are some hair accessories worth checking out.

Hairpins for a polished holiday look

The great thing about hairpins is they can be worn with any type of hairstyle. They can be used to pin up pieces of hair when wearing your hair down, to do a half-up, half-down style, or jazz up a bun.

I’ve used hairpins decorated with pearls or rhinestones on my buns, and to style bangs I was growing out.

When selecting hairpins, I avoid ones with sharp edges or ends, because they can cut the hair. I look at their weight, as heavy decorative pins or clips can be uncomfortable or pull on the hair.

Headbands for an easy hairstyle upgrade

Sometimes you want to wear your hair down, but it can look and feel boring. That’s where a headband can help. Adding a slim or decorated headband can give a simple down hairstyle a festive touch.

When I wear a headband, I tend to gravitate toward ones that are a little thicker, but they can look and feel a little more casual, which is great for a non-fancy get-together. Wearing a slim or metal headband adds more elegance to pair with fancier attire.

Scrunchies for a festive ponytail or bun

Substituting a scrunchie for a typical ponytail holder is an easy way to dress up a ponytail or bun.

I use satin scrunchies for my buns and ponytails. They are gentler on my relaxed hair and also look more sophisticated. Plus, you can find some festive ones that can work for your more casual friends' gathering or black-tie work party.

When looking for scrunchies, look at the size, as the more hair you have, the larger you’d want it to be to make sure it’s holding all of your hair without being too tight.

Claw clips for quick elevated updos

Claw clips are another quick way to pull your hair into an updo, and a metallic finish can make a simple hairstyle look a little more dressed up and elevated.

This is something I would use for a sleek updo or a casual holiday gathering when I want something more decorative than my everyday claw clip.

When shopping for a metal claw clip, look at the size of the clip, teeth, and closure. The goal is to have one that can comfortably hold your hair without forcing it into place or putting too much tension on your strands and edges.
