Neutrogena Hydroboost Moisturizer with Hyaluronic Acid and SPF 50 Review

Neutrogena is a skincare brand that has been around for years but I didn’t really start paying attention to it until I stumbled across one of the moisturizers in its Hydro Boost line the Hydro Boost City Shield Hydrating Water Gel Sunscreen.

Since I liked that moisturizer so much when it was out of stock in Target near me I decided to give its sibling the Neutrogena Hydroboost Moisturizer with Hyaluronic Acid and SPF 50 a try. It’s a little thicker than the Hydro Boost City Shield Hydrating Water Gel Sunscreen so I did have some concerns that it may be too much hydration for my oily skin.

As part of the Neutrogena Hydro Boost line, this moisturizer is infused with purified hyaluronic acid. The purpose of the hyaluronic acid is to provide ultra-hydration by replenishing water and helping to improve the skin's moisture barrier making the skin look smoother and more hydrated.

In addition to this moisturizer and the Neutrogena Hydro Boost City Shield Hydrating Water Gel Sunscreen, the Hydro Boost collection also has cleansers, moisturizers without sunscreen, serums, and even makeup.

About the Neutrogena Hydroboost Moisturizer with Hyaluronic Acid and SPF 50

This is a skin product that is two steps in one- hydration and sun protection. “This gel moisturizer instantly quenches skin and shields it from harmful UVA and UVB rays.”

It claims the “non-greasy, fragrance-free formula combines hydrating hyaluronic acid and broad-spectrum SPF 50 Helioplex® sunscreen. It’s weightless, invisible on all skin tones, and leaves skin feeling soft and smooth — everything you’d want from a daily facial moisturizer with SPF.”

The four main claims of this Neutrogena moisturizer are:
  • Clinically proven to hydrate all-day
  • An ultra-lightweight formula that dries quickly and leaves no white cast
  • See radiant, healthy-looking skin in just one week
  • Formulated with supercharged antioxidants like vitamin E to help fight daily environmental aggressors

Why I like and continue using this Neutrogena moisturizer

I had originally been using the Neutrogena Hydro Boost City Shield Hydrating Water Gel Sunscreen. One time I went to my local Target and it was out of stock. It was also out of stock in my local Walmart.

I didn’t want to travel to one of the nearby towns for it. I also didn’t want to order it online because I would have to spend a minimum dollar amount to get free shipping meaning I’d need to buy other products I didn’t need.

My only other alternative was to find a substitute. I looked at some other brands and ended up coming back to the Neutrogena section of the shelving. I settled on the Neutrogena Hydroboost Moisturizer with Hyaluronic Acid and SPF 50 because it had SPF like the City Shield.

I was concerned that this moisturizer would be too thick for oily skin as it feels and looks more like a cream than a gel. I also wanted to see if a white cast would be left on my skin because of the higher SPF count as that tends to happen on my skin tone.

The day finally came when it was time to break open the moisturizer and apply it. I was pleasantly surprised because
  • It is lighter weight than I anticipated
  • It’s not greasy
  • It absorbs into my skin quickly
  • My skin wasn’t irritated
  • There was no lasting white cast

I use the Neutrogena Hydroboost Moisturizer with Hyaluronic Acid and SPF 50 as part of my morning skincare routine. The reason is it’s my more “expensive” moisturizer and it has SPF which is only needed when I go outside during the day. I don’t need sunscreen when I go to bed.

Will this be my new daytime moisturizer going forward? For now, it will be. I’m not always able to find the City Shield Sunscreen in the store and the Neutrogena Hydroboost Moisturizer with Hyaluronic Acid and SPF 50 is a few dollars cheaper. I do anticipate I will probably switch between the two based on availability and pricing.
