One higher-end product I’ve used for a while is the Urban Decay All Nighter Setting Spray. It’s one of my favorites for helping my makeup last longer. But I wanted to find a more affordable drugstore alternative that could work just as well to control oil on my oily skin. I tried several different drugstore setting sprays and realized a specific one from NYX is the best for my oily skin.

The drugstore setting spray that came out on top for me is the NYX Matte Finish Setting Spray. I first spotted it during a casual walk through the makeup aisle at Target. I looked it up, and the description caught my eye along with some of the reviews, so I decided to give it a try. I'm glad I did because it quickly became a staple in my makeup routine.
NYX says that this setting spray helps “keep makeup looking fresh as a daisy with that 'just-applied' look all day and all night long.” I prefer matte setting sprays because no matter what, I will have some oil production, but using matte products helps make the oil less visible as the day goes on.
The NYX Matte Finish Setting Spray has several claims about what it does and how it helps oily skin
I use this spray both for my everyday light makeup looks and for fuller, more glam makeup days. While it’s not a miracle product (let’s be honest, no setting spray is), it does a good job of keeping my makeup from sliding off my face, especially when I’m sweating or out all day.
Application-wise, I usually give my face a couple of spritzes after I’ve finished my makeup to lock everything in. The spray is pretty forceful, so I feel like I oversprayed when I first started using it. After a little trial and error, I learned how to best apply it.
When I apply this NYX setting spray, I first shake it up, hold it a bit away from my face, and then spray my whole face a couple of times. This way, my face doesn’t get drenched. I let the setting spray dry down, put on my mascara, and go about my day.
For days when I’ll be out from morning till night and maybe spending a bit of that time outside, one trick I use with this NYX setting spray is to spray my face two times. The first thing after I’ve applied my base, concealer, if I’m wearing it, and my eyeshadow. The second after I’ve put on all of my makeup.
I like that the NYX Matte Finish Setting Spray is matte, but I don’t feel it on my skin after applying it. I’ve used some other matte setting sprays, and boy, did I feel them like a mask on my skin. I don’t feel it even when I do the two spray times for the extra lock-in.
It keeps my makeup looking good throughout the day. I can sweat, but not have my makeup immediately start dripping down my face. To me, this gives a soft matte finish that on my skin doesn’t last all day, which is pretty consistent with any setting spray or matte makeup product I’ve used. But it does help keep my face from looking like a greaseball during the day.
The NYX Matte Finish Setting Spray has pretty much become a go-to for me. There was another matte setting spray that I tried out in this video, but I decided that it’s not for me. I didn’t like how it felt and looked on my skin after applying it.
Another thing I like about this NYX setting spray is that I can buy it during a Target or Walmart run. Plus, I can purchase it online or in-store at Ulta or CVS. It can be found on Amazon. There’s also the option to purchase it from NYX directly.
If you have oily skin like I do and are looking for a more affordable alternative to prestige setting sprays, I definitely recommend giving the NYX Matte Finish Setting Spray a try. It’s affordable, effective, and available just about everywhere.

- It has “a lightweight, no transfer, long-lasting formula that keeps makeup looking flawless with that 'just-applied' look from day to night”
- It’s “enriched with Niacinamide, which works to reduce & combat shine, while leaving a silky-smooth, poreless complexion behind”
