With my oily skin, I don’t play when it comes to locking my makeup in place. Once I learned about how setting sprays could help keep my makeup intact for hours, I tried several different ones over the years. And I think I’ve found a keeper.

One of the more recent ones I’ve tried and started using is the L’Oreal Paris Infallible 3‑Second Setting Mist. I rarely wear any L’Oreal makeup, so this wasn’t on my radar until I saw it in the store when browsing the makeup aisles, and it piqued my interest. I didn’t purchase it the first time I saw it. I did some research, and eventually my curiosity got the better of me, and I bought it.
After using several different setting sprays over the years, I was expecting this one to be like the others and maybe even more inferior because it’s a drugstore brand. What I found after using it surprised me.
First, let’s talk about what this product actually is. The Infallible 3-Second Setting Mist is an aerosol setting spray designed to lock makeup in place as the final step of your routine. Unlike traditional pump sprays, this comes out in a continuous microfine mist that coats the face evenly and dries quickly. It’s meant to create an invisible film over the skin that helps preserve your makeup look for extended wear.
According to the brand, the Infalliable 3-Second Setting Mist is all about long wear and durability. It claims to set makeup in as little as three seconds while helping it last up to 36 hours. It’s also marketed as transfer-proof, sweat-resistant, waterproof, and smudge-resistant. Everything you’d want if you need your makeup to survive real life. It claims to provide a natural finish and an even application with no droplets, no white cast, and no sticky residue.
I’ve been using this for a few months now and have some thoughts.
The first thing I noticed is the aerosol format. This is not your soft, hydrating mist. It sprays more like a hairspray. I have to be careful how close to my face I spray and how much. When I get too close or spray too much, I can feel it on my face.
Application of this requires a really light touch. The directions say to “spray in a circular motion, 12 inches away from your face for 3 to 4 seconds for an easy and even application.” I like to do one light pass across my face rather than multiple layers.
Sometimes, if I know I have a long, long day wearing makeup, I’ll use a few spritzes of a water-based setting spray on my face before I put on my setting powder. Then I’ll use the 3-Second Setting Mist to finish off and make sure everything is locked in place.
Not only does it spray like a hairspray, but it works like one. It does a really good job of locking my makeup in place. I can go all day without my makeup budging. And I mean all day. I can put my makeup on at 8:00 in the morning, and it still looks good without blotting or touchups at 9:00 at night. I’ve also noticed that I don’t get oily spots on my face throughout the day, like with other setting sprays.
One tip I have is that it doesn't feel like it's made for dry skin. It's not hydrating at all, which is fine for my oily skin and not something I'm looking for in a setting spray. While this doesn't have a matte finish, I could see it settling some in lines with dry skin and not feeling comfortable.
I can’t say that it lives up to the transfer-proof and smudge-proof claims. I have noticed that my makeup may transfer and smudge on tissues or clothing, so I still have to be careful.
It is waterproof. I can splash my face with water, pat it dry, and not see any changes in my makeup. In fact, when I wash my face at night, I start by using a wet, warm washcloth to start breaking up the makeup because just splashing my face with water doesn’t cut it.
If you’re interested in picking it up, it’s easy to find. You can grab it at major drugstores and beauty retailers like Ulta, Target, Walmart, and CVS, as well as Amazon.
