Does Washing Our Hair Really Need To Take All Day?

When I made the decision to take better care of my relaxed hair, the first place I went to was the Internet. I used search terms such as healthy relaxed hair and taking care of relaxed hair to see what recommendations, tips, recommendations, and products I could find.

What I found were several posts and videos with women who took several hours or all day to wash their hair with beautiful results.

After reading the wash posts blog posts and watching the videos of other hair bloggers, I came to the conclusion that I wasn't taking washing my hair seriously and added some steps and products to my wash days. This resulted in several of my wash days including the following steps:
  • Detangling: 20 minutes
  • Pre-pooing: 60 minutes
  • Cleansing: 30 minutes
  • Tea rinse and deep condition: 30+ minutes
  • Air dry: 1+ hours
  • Moisturize, seal, and finish drying with a hooded dryer: 60 minutes

Yep, you read right. My wash days would be about 3 1/2 hours long. Basically taking me all afternoon or evening. And that's not taking into consideration the time I would spend doing any other types of treatments such as protein treatments.

I did the long wash days for a little more than a year and then got to the point where I didn't feel like spending so much time on my hair. My wash days now only include four steps and take me less than two hours:

The funny thing is I think my hair is in the best shape it's been since I shortened my wash days. While I think doing all those steps and taking extra special care of my hair during wash days was needed at the beginning of my hair journey I don't think it's necessary with the progress I've made. So shorter wash days are here to stay for the time being.

  1. Wash days need not to be long. I like it short, uncomplicated steps and quick styling.

  2. When I was in the thick of really being healthy with my hair it would take at least three hours but could take overnight for my hair to dry on rods. Most recently as wash days have been after my hair comes out of my twists I actually haven't been doing the full day thing but it still takes a few hours. I'll see how long it takes after these come down again and I'm mostly tending to my hair out of a protective style. That may be a while though. Protective styles are the business lol.
