My Favorite Things 2021: Hair Products

It’s hard to believe that 2021 is coming to a close. It started off a little slow and then really picked up speed.

In addition to some big life changes, 2021 brought drastic, but positive, improvements to my hair. When 2021 started I had seen some progress in my hair’s journey of recovery from protein overload. It wasn’t as much as I would have liked but I was feeling better about my hair and no longer feeling like I would have to cut it all off and start over. It wasn’t until late summer/early fall though that my hair really turned a corner and I really felt better about it.

I can’t really pin down what it was that really helped my hair this year. It seems like it was a combination of things.

TGIN and Mielle hair products

I limited the number of new products I tried on my hair and really thought about whether or not they were what my hair needed or just products I wanted to try.

The hair products I tried out this year were

This year I added a couple of new and old techniques into my wash routine - hair steaming and green tea hair rinses.

Outside of those things I stuck to my go-to products, what was working for my relaxed hair. Of the new and staple products, there were some that I seemed to really gravitate towards and use a lot this year.

As I was typing this out I realized that I apparently really like many of TGIN’s products. Here are the ones I used a lot this year:

TGIN Sulfate Free Shampoo

This is my go-to shampoo. I love the lather it has and how gentle it is. It gets my hair clean without making it feel dry. You can see my full review of the shampoo here.

TGIN Miracle RepaiRx Deep Hydrating Hair Mask

Right now I’m only using two hair masks on my relaxed hair but this is the one I pull out to use the most. It’s nice and thick and hydrates my hair really well. Read my review of it here.

TGIN Argan and Miracle RepaiRx Anti-breakage serums

After trying the argan oil serum I started to use hair serums as my sealant when I moisturize and seal my hair. During a sale, I bought the Miracle RepaiRx serum and have alternated using it and the argan oil one.

TGIN Butter Cream Daily Moisturizer

When my hair needs some extra moisture during the week I pull this hair moisturizer. It has protein in it so I don’t use it regularly.

TGIN Green Tea Super Moist Leave In Conditioner

When I’m not using the TGIN Butter Cream Daily Moisturizer I’m using the Green Tea Super Moist Leave-in Conditioner. You can check out my full review here.

This year, I started roller setting at home and found three products that helped to give me smooth results from my roller sets

One thing that has really helped my hair is the hair steamer I bought this summer. I used it every wash day for about two months. I’ve since pulled back and only use it once a month. This is because of the extra work it takes for me to set it up in my current living situation. Once I move back into my own place I’ll be using it several times a month. Since I started steaming when deep conditioning, my hair looks, feels, and stays hydrated longer. I share more about hair steaming in this blog post and this Instagram post.

As my hair started to improve I decided to do a little more with it and accessorize:

Satin scrunchies

I like to use these for my buns and ponytails. They are soft, smooth, and thereby gentle on my hair.

Invisibobbles

These are another alternative to the satin scrunchies. They aren’t as gentle on my hair as the satin scrunchies but they are much better for relaxed hair than the typical elastic band.

Headbands

I’m wearing my hair down more now. There are still several areas of my hair where it’s short because of hair breakage from protein overload so I’ve been disguising that with headbands and half ponytails. I found these particular headbands via Hairlicious.
